Horseless Ranch Rodeo Rules
Ridin’ the River Cowboy Fellowship’s mission is to provide an event that is fun, safe and fair. The following rules apply to all contestants. JUDGES HAVE THE FINAL SAY DURING THE EVENT. All contestants must complete a release form and entry fees paid prior to event.
General Rules:
- Contestants must wear appropriate arena clothes
- Contestants must complete a registration and release form ~ w-9 if event is paying out cash prizes
- Cussing, arguing and fighting will NOT be tolerated ~ any person(s) acting this way will be asked to leave the event and entry fees will be forfeited.
Penning
- Three head of cattle will be settled in the large pen. Time starts when one contestant exits the designated area. All three head of cattle must be penned in the smaller pen. Time stops when the gate is closed and latched.
- Contestants can NOT use rope, feed and cattle handling equipment to pen cattle (no hot shots or sorting sticks).
- 3 minute time limit to pen cattle.
- Failure to pen all three head will result in a no time which will be scored by doubling time limit (ex. No time equals 6 minutes on the score sheet)
Mugging
- Contestants will enter small pen and sort out designated livestock. Once designated animal is in larger pen and the gate secured, contestants must rope animal by catch as catch can. Once roped animal will be mugged down and three legs must be tied (one front and two hind legs). Animal must stay tied for 15 seconds. Once judge gives go ahead the team must remove all ropes. Time stops once animal is tied and all team members and catch ropes are clear the animal. TIME WILL NOT STOP IF ANY ROPE OTHER THAN TIE ROPE IS TOUCHING THE ANIMAL.
- 6 minute time limit to sort & mug cattle
- Failure to complete event with a legal time will result in no time and scored as double maximum time limit (12 minutes)
Branding
- Sort out remaining two cows into larger pen in the order called. Once in the larger pen the first number called must be roped and branded on the right hip. Only legal head catch or heel catch is allowed. Example: slick horns, half head or neck catch on the head. One or two hind legs on the heels). Each cow must have a legal head catch and heel loop before it is branded (marked on right hip). When ropes and contestants are clear first animal the second animal can be roped and branded. Time stops when both animals have been branded and all ropes/contestants clear of animals.

Trailer Loading
- All three animals in the larger pen will be penned in smaller pen, pushed down alley and loaded in trailer. Trailer gate must be properly shut and latched. Time stops when all contestants are inside of original start circle in large pen.
- 3 minute time limit.
- Failure to complete event with a legal time will result in no time and scored as double maximum time limit (6 minutes)
Winners will be determined by the shortest time taken to complete all events. In the event of a tie on total time ~ the team having the fastest time in mugging will be used to break tie; if both teams tied in that event then the penning event time will be used ~ Then Branding… If team times are tied in all events then judges will determine winner by toss of a coin.
