Bandera’s history did not include Buffalo Bill, but the history of Buffalo Bill had a huge impact on the rodeo as we know it today and Bandera is the Cowboy Capital of the World.
William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody took his Wild West Show all over America, South America, and Europe from 1882 to 1913. Buffalo Bill was a real American hero. He was a pony express rider, mule skinner, Civil War soldier, buffalo hunter and guide, cavalry scout, Justice of the Peace, stage actor, author, legislator, promoter of women’s rights and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.
Buffalo Bill and his Congress of Rough Riders of the World were considered to be the entertainment of America and were seen by tens of millions of spectators worldwide. Many others tried to copy Buffalo Bill’s show but there was only one Wild West. What we know of the Old Wild West, comes directly from Buffalo Bill’s portrayal of the Western Frontier during the Wild West Show days. Indeed, today’s rodeo is the grandchild of the Wild West Show.
Like the original Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, Celebrate Bandera’s Wild West Show will feature a grand entry, trick riders, pony express, a hold up of the Deadwood Stage, trick ropers, Native Americans Indians, hoop dancing, a reenactment of the gun fight at the OK Corral, a mounted shooting rifle demonstration and an Indian attack on a wagon train where the cavalry comes to the rescue.
The Wild West show will start at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by bull riding at 8:00 p.m.
